Posts, comments, users, and communities

Reddit API

Search Reddit by keyword or read a subreddit's listing, then open a post to get its full comment tree. A username returns that account's posts, comments, and karma. Every list comes back as JSON with a cursor for the next page.

Capabilities

What you can do with the Reddit API

Start from a keyword, a subreddit name, or a username. The post endpoint takes the full URL of a thread, which search and listings both return.

Search

Search returns up to 25 results per page, as posts, comments, users, or communities, across Reddit or inside one subreddit. Sort by relevance, hot, top, new, or comments; the relevance, top, and comments sorts can also be limited to the past hour, day, week, month, or year. See examples

A subreddit's listing

Pass a subreddit name or URL and a sort of hot, top, new, or rising to get the posts listed there. The response includes a cursor, so a monitor can walk further down the list on the next call. See examples

A thread with its comments

Send a post URL and you get the post's title, text, and score, plus the comment tree. Each comment has its author, votes, score, creation time, text, and nested replies, and meta.totalComments counts them all. See examples

A user's activity

A username returns that account's public posts, comments, or both, sorted by hot, top, or new. A separate stats endpoint returns karma by type, account age, and the verified, gold, and moderator flags. See examples

Newest comments in a subreddit

This endpoint returns the latest comments posted anywhere in one subreddit. It suits a tool that tracks how people are reacting, without opening every thread first. See examples

Community directories

Popular and newly created subreddits come back as lists of communities with their public metadata. For one community, the info endpoint returns its title, descriptions, subscriber count, creation time, and NSFW flag. See examples

Shortened examples

Sample responses

Each sample is one object cut down from a response body: a search hit, a post, a comment, a user profile, and a community. Live responses also include a meta object, and the scores and counts shown are examples.

How a call usually goes

Most integrations search for a topic or read a subreddit's listing first, then keep the URLs of the posts worth reading. Each of those posts is one more call that returns the body and every comment. When an author matters, their username leads to their recent activity.

Documentation

The Reddit docs cover search filters and sorts, subreddit listings and comments, popular and new community lists, single posts with comment trees, and user activity and stats. Each endpoint shows how to pass the cursor for the next page.

Code samples

Every endpoint in the documentation includes a sample request in Shell, JavaScript, PHP, and Python.

Why SteadyAPI

Read the conversation you need

Each endpoint returns one kind of Reddit object, so you can read a single thread or a single account without archiving a whole community.

Cursor paging on every list

List endpoints return meta.cursor. Send it back as cursor for the next page, and stop when it comes back null.

A whole thread in one call

The post endpoint returns the comment tree with nested replies, so you do not have to request each reply chain on its own.

Karma without the history

When you only need to size up an account, the user stats endpoint is weight 1. Pulling the account's posts and comments is weight 2.

Search inside one community

Add a subreddit to a search to keep post and comment results inside it. User and community searches always run across all of Reddit, even with a subreddit set.

Pricing

* Overage is optional and stays off until you turn it on in Billing. It is available on paid plans billed by card through Stripe, and not during a trial. Usage is counted in monthly periods that start on your billing day, yearly plans included. Requests past the included limit are charged at the plan's rate for each started block of 1,000, up to the overage cap, on one invoice after the period ends. Amounts under $0.50 carry over to the next invoice. If you change plans during a period, the limit and overage rate of the plan you are on when the period ends apply to the whole period.

The Free plan is also capped at 20 requests per day (New York time). Requests count by endpoint weight, and only responses with HTTP status 200 count.

Commercial use is included only on the plans that list it. If you are not sure whether your project counts as commercial use, email [email protected] before you launch.
