Let’s be honest: retail investors move markets now. If you aren't watching what’s happening on r/wallstreetbets or r/investing, you’re missing half the picture.

I’m going to walk you through building a backend service that pulls Reddit data specifically for financial analysis using the SteadyAPI. We aren't just going to "scrape" text; we’re going to structure it so we can actually measure hype vs. reality.

Here is the plan:

  • Search for specific tickers to gauge volume

  • Monitor specific high-impact subreddits

  • Cross-reference that data with actual real-time stock quotes

Let’s get into the code.

Obtain API Key

Get your API key

1. Authentication

First things first, you need to authenticate. Don't overcomplicate this. Just grab your Bearer token from the dashboard and pass it in the header.

Docs:
SteadyAPI Docs: Authenticating Requests

headers = {
  'Authorization': 'Bearer {YOUR_AUTH_KEY}'
}

2. The "Hype Check": Searching for Tickers

The first thing our dashboard needs is a search bar. When a user types
$TSLA or
NVIDIA,
we need to know what the broad conversation looks like across the platform.

We'll use the Search endpoint. This is great for volume analysis.
If you search AMC and get 50 results from the last hour vs. 500, that’s a signal.

Endpoint:
GET /v1/reddit/search

Docs:
SteadyAPI Docs: Reddit Search

The Code

import requests

url = 'https://api.steadyapi.com/v1/reddit/search'
params = {
  'search': 'NVDA', # The ticker or keyword
  'subreddit': 'investing', # Optional: focus on serious discussion
  'filter': 'posts', # We want thread starters
  'timeFilter': 'day', # Only recent stuff
  'sortType': 'relevance'
}

response = requests.get(url, headers=headers, params=params)
data = response.json()

What you get back

You want to parse:

  • ups → popularity and agreement

  • num_comments → controversy or deep engagement

High comment counts usually indicate debate.
High upvotes indicate consensus.

{
  "meta": { "total": 25 },
  "body": [
    {
      "title": "Nvidia earnings play?",
      "subreddit": "investing",
      "ups": 1540,
      "num_comments": 342,
      "url_overridden_by_dest": "...",
      "created_utc": 1692284657
    }
  ]
}

Key Fields

  • ups
    Measures post popularity and agreement

  • num_comments
    Strong engagement or controversy indicator

  • created_utc
    Timestamp for real-time trend scoring

  • subreddit
    Contextualizes the type of investor discussion

3. The "Deep Dive": Monitoring Subreddit Feeds

Searching is reactive. For a dashboard, you want a proactive feed.

You want to constantly poll the Top or Hot posts of market-moving subreddits like r/wallstreetbets to see what's trending before it hits the news.

We use the /posts endpoint for this.
This endpoint requires the full Reddit URL of the subreddit.

Endpoint:
GET /v1/reddit/posts

Docs:
SteadyAPI Docs: Reddit Posts

The Code

url = 'https://api.steadyapi.com/v1/reddit/posts'
params = {
  'url': 'https://www.reddit.com/r/wallstreetbets',
  'sortType': 'hot' # 'hot' shows trending, 'new' catches early moves
}

response = requests.get(url, headers=headers, params=params)

Use Case

Filter the response body and inspect link_flair_text.

In WSB, look for:

  • DD (Due Diligence)

  • YOLO

If you see a DD post with >5k upvotes, extract the ticker immediately and put it on your watch list.

Key Fields

  • link_flair_text
    Filters high-signal posts vs memes

  • title
    Primary ticker extraction source

  • ups
    Detects viral momentum

4. Sentiment Analysis: Reading the Comments

Titles are often clickbait.
The real sentiment is in the comments.

Are people agreeing with the bullish thesis, or roasting the OP?

We can pull the latest comment stream and run NLP or keyword counting.

Endpoint:
GET /v1/reddit/subreddit/comments

Docs:
SteadyAPI Docs: Subreddit Comments

The Code

url = 'https://api.steadyapi.com/v1/reddit/subreddit/comments'
params = {
  'subreddit': 'wallstreetbets'
}

response = requests.get(url, headers=headers, params=params)
comments = response.json()['body']

bullish_count = 0
bearish_count = 0

for comment in comments:
    text = comment['body'].lower()
    if 'moon' in text or 'calls' in text or 'buy' in text:
        bullish_count += 1
    if 'crash' in text or 'puts' in text or 'sell' in text:
        bearish_count += 1

print(f"Bull/Bear Ratio: {bullish_count}/{bearish_count}")

Key Fields

  • body
    Raw sentiment text source for NLP

  • score
    Community agreement strength

  • author
    Account signal validation

5. Early Signal Detection: Tracking Newly Created Subreddits

Most sentiment dashboards only monitor large communities like r/wallstreetbets or r/stocks. The problem is that by the time a trend reaches those subreddits, the move may already be underway.

A powerful edge is watching newly created communities. New subreddits often form around emerging niches, viral creators, new technologies, or speculative assets before they become mainstream discussion topics.

SteadyAPI provides a direct way to monitor this using the New Subreddits endpoint.

Endpoint:
GET /v1/reddit/subreddit/new

Docs:
SteadyAPI Docs: New Subreddits

This endpoint returns recently created communities along with metadata such as subscriber count, description, creation timestamp, and visibility settings.

The Code

import requests
import json

url = 'https://api.steadyapi.com/v1/reddit/subreddit/new'

headers = {
    'Authorization': 'Bearer {YOUR_AUTH_KEY}'
}

response = requests.request('GET', url, headers=headers)
data = response.json()

# Parse newly created communities
for subreddit in data.get('body', [])[:10]:
    name = subreddit.get('display_name_prefixed')
    subscribers = subreddit.get('subscribers')
    created = subreddit.get('created_utc')
    description = subreddit.get('public_description')

    print(f"{name}")
    print(f"Subscribers: {subscribers}")
    print(f"Created UTC: {created}")
    print(f"Description: {description}")
    print("-" * 30)

What You Get Back

Instead of scraping Reddit listings, you receive structured metadata:

  • Newly created subreddit name

  • Subscriber count

  • Public description

  • Creation timestamp

  • Community settings

Example response includes fields like:

  • display_name_prefixed → r/TheRakerzDozen

  • subscribers → early adoption signal

  • created_utc → exact creation timing

  • public_description → topic classification

Why This Matters (Trading & Analytics)

Monitoring new subreddit creation gives you a lead indicator, not a lagging one.

Use cases include:

Emerging Trend Detection
If multiple communities appear around AI tools, crypto narratives, or specific companies, it may signal growing retail interest.

Narrative Discovery
Before a ticker trends publicly, niche groups often form discussion hubs.

Market Intelligence Pipelines
You can automatically classify new communities using NLP and flag finance-related ones for monitoring.

Error Handling

Common API responses:

  • 401 Unauthenticated → Missing or invalid API key

  • 403 Unauthorized → Permission issue

  • 404 Not Found → Incorrect endpoint

  • 422 Validation Error → Missing required parameters

Always check the response status before parsing.

How This Fits Into the Dashboard

Final workflow now becomes:

  1. Monitor trending posts (/reddit/posts)

  2. Search ticker hype (/reddit/search)

  3. Analyze sentiment (/reddit/subreddit/comments)

  4. Overlay real prices (/markets/quote)

  5. Detect new communities early (/reddit/subreddit/new)

This turns your system from a reaction tool into an early discovery engine.
